I drew this at art school last week. I couldn't get a clear view of the model so I included one of the students in the foreground. It was a case of necessity being the mother of invention but it makes for a better composition.

This is one of the regular models. His name is Michael, I think. I prefer working in oils but decided to use acrylic at art school because it's fast-drying. I take my paintings home from the class and there's less chance of smudging.

A few students had a problem with this model, saying he was grumpy. I didn't think he was too bad. It's true he didn't want to remove his spectacles, claiming it would result in eye strain. He acquiesced eventually, but it's obvious he wasn't happy.

I painted 'Crown Circus' in 1976. I used Windsor & Newton ink on a good quality board and it's been stored, away from sunlight, for 30-plus years. You can get some idea of the intensity of colour that first drew me to the medium.
